Family and friends are mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of Makenzi Nichole “Kenz” Kern, who passed away from health complications on June 8, 2026, just two days after celebrating her 26th birthday. She was surrounded by some of her closest friends while on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Saint Barthélemy.

Born on June 6, 2000, Kenz lived a life filled with laughter, friendship, and compassion. Raised in Council Bluffs, she graduated from Lewis Central High School in 2018 before attending Iowa State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies in 2022. During her time at the university, she proudly cheered for the Cyclones and formed lifelong friendships that remained an important part of her life.

Following graduation, Kenz began a career with the YMCA of Greater Omaha, serving first as a Youth and Family Director and later as Membership Director at the Armbrust Branch. Colleagues and friends remember her dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment to helping others.

To know Kenz was truly to love her. She was known for her humor, playful personality, and ability to brighten any room. Whether sharing a sarcastic joke, making friends wherever she went, or quietly helping others without seeking recognition, she left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Kenz loved the water and cherished time spent swimming, boating, water skiing, and exploring new adventures. Friends recalled how much joy she found during her trip to St. Barths, where she eagerly embraced every moment and every new experience.

She also shared a close bond with her younger sister, Delani, and treasured her relationships with family, friends, boyfriend Alan Dungan, and her beloved cat, Dusty.

Though her life was tragically cut short, Kenz’s legacy lives on through the countless people she touched with her warmth, generosity, humor, and friendship.

She is survived by her mother, Teri Dietchler; father, Chris Kern; sister, Delani Kern; boyfriend, Alan Dungan; grandparents; extended family members; and a wide circle of friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Makenzi “Kenz” Kern will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew her.
